Pondering For Reasons?

It's not good when one of your best employee quits. The productivity takes a hit, morality goes down and the hardest part is to find an equal or a better replacement. With more statistics coming to light recently, they all point to reduced average tenure of an employee in an organizaton and not to mention about the reduced loyalty factors.

There is also a saying that Employees don't leave the company, they leave the managers. This would mean that Employees don't leave if you keep them happy. But is that so simple and straight forward in the current demanding world?

With my experience and knowledge in IT Industry and also having seen many people quit for what they perceive as better opportunities, I would definitely not drop the onus on the Managers alone. Here's is my take on the subject from both Manager's and Employee's perspective:

All said and done, an organization only thrives on its profitability and growth. Non-profitability outwits morality or loyalty at any given time with very minimal threshold. The onus on profitability definitely lies on the manager.
So what could the Manager have done better to hold on to one of his best employees? Or what would the employee need to find to achieve their needs?

Straighten out the career path, purpose and goals:

GALLUP business Journal came up with an employee engagement survey asking the below question:
“The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.”

The study reveals that the employee's deeply felt sense of purpose is highly relevant to organization's employee retention. Let's be honest with the fact that most of the employees do not have any short term goal or a long term goal. Simply putting it as they do not lose any sleep over it. Only handful of employees understand what it is to have a career vision. One of the manager's responsibilities would be to get the purpose and goals set with his team members and also follow up with them regularly with their progress and feedback.

Employees' lack of understanding about what they have achieved and what is still out there to achieve in an organization would be a major factor when they think to part ways with your organization.

Reality check:

There is a fine line of reality between what employee expects to be paid or rewarded and what could be done by the manager for the employee. A manager's responsibility is to keep the reality check in minds of the employee and reason with him by being both straight forward and realistic based on his objectives and achievements.

This is helpful when the manager and the employee can settle down and find a better middle ground or find an alternate beneficial way when it comes to hikes and rewards,

Over committing to the employee with something that is not realistic and not delivering the same to the employee is one of the major reasons for the employee to part ways with the organization.

Be a sponsor/ Find a sponsor:

A sponsor is someone who is capable enough to spot the right talent and recommend that talent to various new prospects and opportunities in an organization. A sponsor also serves as a development coach who can help the employee to envision the next career role or to achieve better results in the current role. One of the major assets of a manager would be playing the role of a sponsor whenever needed.

Most employees quit the organization due to lack of sponsorship. The onus is also on the employee to find and connect with the right sponsor.

Fun:

The advent and evolution of film, television, the internet, social media and handheld devices means that everything is on demand all the time and wherever we may be. As a result, putting in straight 8-9 hours of work at the same desk is becoming less and less attractive to the employees. This doesn't mean that people have become lazier but only means that defining work in such traditional manner does no longer make sense in such fast-paced world.

The manager should embrace a culture of increased autonomy and innovation. One of such innovative programs is ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment) that relies on increasing employee engagement by reducing work to a baseline: productivity. That's all.!

Such initiatives result in employees achieving instant gratification and hence may after all decide to stay.

These are of course my personal views and viewers' comments are welcomed!

It was a night journey and we got more & more vomitting casualities as we were towards the hill side. We stopped by a excellent dhaba on the NH on the way to Shimla...And still its the best dhaba i've ever tasted.

@ River Beas....

There was nothing special in Shimla except the kufri view and all d beautiful girls. It was so pleasant to watch..(I meant the gals anyway... ;)). We were actually searching for places to see but din find anythin interesting there. So we stayed back at the hotel room for a long time. We had an evening walk and a midnight walk outside knowing that we were heading no-where...

Lemme come to the "horse -taming" experience at Kufri. We had to ride by horse to reach the top of the hill. And like we see in our movies ...i thought it was'nt a big deal. The first thing i ever did with a horse was "Falling down..while attempting to hop on to it...It wasnt my fault anyway.. Some ropes on the seats were not tied". We got fuckin scared at the horse was riding on the edges of the cliff like it was on a Highway. I could see the whole city from that edge of the cliff. Somehow I managed to stick with it and we reached the top of d hill.

The second drawback i got was "I again fckin fell down from the horse on my attempt to get down". The we got to see a local girl who does her business with an oak or somethin to take pictures with it. We were happy that she spoke tamil somewhat fluently. Her oak's name was "Kajol". ;)

There was not much fun in shimla as i was expecting there . Our next stop was "Kulu-Manali".
This was my best experience ever. Stay tuned to ma blog as i wil update that experience too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10201623333204598744noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3076880243818190391.post-38352450450300288132008-08-13T22:51:00.005+05:302008-08-14T23:10:32.667+05:30Weekend @ Hyderabad !!!It was friday evening, 6 of us left for hyderabad to attend ma frnd Abhishek's sis marriage. Hyderabad is one of the cities i've never seen before. So there were lot of expections on this trip.

First of all, When we stepped out of the train at Hyderabad station, I felt awesome. It was 7.30 am.It was raining and cold and i dreamnt of having the same temperature in Chennai. then i came to realise how fucked up it would turn up to be. We somehow caught an auto to the guest house and guess what!!?? That was the last travel we did that day. The roads became so much fucked up that not even a single auto or even a taxi would pick us up even to the iMAX. So that saturday turned out to be a crap.

The next day was the wedding. It was very nice.Especially the 'class A' serving girls and the food. It was awesome. Thank GOD!! It was not raining this day. We attended the wedding, had our lunch and we planned for an iMAX movie for the evening. Though the rain god had forgiven us ...the was no damn tickets availiable as it was a sunday. Anyhow we got a view of the Hussain Sagar Lake and spent our evening over there. We walked for an hour or more till our legs got tired.

Then we had a party arranged @ our guest house that night which prolonged for a long long time that even our neighbours over there got fucked up and began shouting at us.The next day was monday ..and we were sure that iMAX would have ticket availiablity. So we went for the "Dark Knight" morning show.

It was my bestest theatre experience. Why the fck chennai does not hav an iMAX??????
Then we just returned to the guest house had our lunch and left hyd. by 6pm.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10201623333204598744noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3076880243818190391.post-82867096460610173562008-08-07T00:27:00.004+05:302008-08-07T00:56:00.952+05:30My long time Dream COme True !!!!!Ive not been an active blogger for almost a month now. Ive got a good reason for this .......

I had always dreamt of owning a website and my website becoming famous like google,yahoo...etc. (I hav the right to dream anythin rite?? ;)) . Well one of them came true last month. On july 14th we hosted our own website named www.techindiaforum.com . Its mainly a forum which discusses latest technologies, Computers, Campus Interviews and Competitive exams.

I always wanted my tech forum to be unique from others. Jus watched this movie in the morning .Aamir Khan has a superb sense of choosing films..And this one is gud...
Im choosy when it comes to Hindi movies...(Frustrated with the amount of hero's and heroin's and item numbers in a film). This is more or less a perfect Indian type Feel-Gud movie .....

Things that took my attention :

Imran Khan : Din expect this much from him...After all hes a cousin of Aamir..(Wat wud u expect????)

Jenelia : I even got frustrated with Jenelia for all the innocent roles she made in tamil and telugu movies....but this one is good....And shes made for that kinda role....

Abbas Tyrewala : Has done a very gud job as writer and director.....

A.R.Rehman : Wat a man!!!..Hes givin hits for years. Donno wat hes made of. Perfect son of Ilayaraja.
I enjoyed the first track most than the others ......
Also..This is the first time im ever interested @ lookin the lyrics of a hindi song..........lol

Kabhi kabhi Aditi zindagi mein yuhi koi apna lagta hai.
Kabhi kabhi Aditi wo bichhar jaaye to ek sapna lagta hai.
Aise mei koi kaise apne aansu o ko behne se roke?
Aur kaise koi sochle everything's gonna be ok?

Kabhi kabhi to lage zindagi mein rahi naa khushi aur naa mazaa.
Kabhi kabhi to lage har din mushkil aur har pal ek sazaa.
Aise mein koi kaise mushkuraye, kaise hasde khush hoke?
Aur kaise koi soch de everything gonna be ok?

Soch jara jaaneja tujhko hum kitna chahte hai.
Rotein hai hum bhi aggar teri ankhon mein aansu aate hai.
Gaane to aata nahi hai magar phir bhi hum gaate hai.
Ke Aditi maana kabhi-kabhi saare jahan mein andhera hota hai;
Lekin raat ke baad hi to sabera hota hai.

Kabhi kabhi Aditi zindagi mei yuhi koi apna lagta hai.
Kabhi kabhi Aditi wo bichhar jaaye to ek sapna lagta hai.
Hey Aditi Hasde hasde hasde hasde hasde, hasde tu zara.
Nahi to bus thora thora thora thora thora, thora mushkura.

Tu khush hai to lage ke jahan mein chhaayi hai khushi.
Suraj nikle baadlon se aur baatein zindagi.
Suun to jara madhosh hawa tujhse kehne lagi.
Ke Aditi wo jo bichhad-te hai ek na ek din phir mil jaate hai;
Aditi jaane tu ya jaane na phool phir khil jaate hai.

Kabhi kabhi Aditi zindagi mei yuhi koi apna lagta hai.
Kabhi kabhi Aditi wo bichhar jaaye to ek sapna lagta hai.
Its June 29th ......U all know this but the reason to start with this is that its been exactly 1 year since HCL came to our college for placement. Its been a long year after dat. The college got over by april 2008 and ive been waiting for the call letter since then.........

Here am i wondering wat to fill in the blog and came up with an idea of doing an assessment of my Corporate Lyf that gonna start soon..
*Most of the ideas r from a wonderful book by CHAD FOWLER i came across.*

HISTORY :

The late 90's saw the boom in IT industry in INDIA and it was mostly due to the overseas IT industries. It was the time when most of the Americans went Jobless and Indians began to establish themselves in the IT field @ Americans' own backyard. As a result of this More Americans got Jobless and more Indians made them sweat for their earning.

The Reason :

* Indians worked with the same efficiency but for even 1/10th of the salary of the Americans or Europeans.

* Working hours r much higher than them.

* High proficiency in English as most of colleges hav English as their first preference.

etc....etc.......
This was the situation in the late 90's and the Early 2000's.......
Enough of the History. Lets come to the present situation>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

PRESENT SITUATION :

All these years we have been riding on our higher English profieciency and low cost . Unlike in the past, The present situation does not favor India much anymore. There are lots of competition arising in the form of CHINA,PHILLIPINES.....etc....
China always had this non-English attitude which led to their downfall in IT fields...But now there are about 5 Million English speaking Graduates coming out each year. The same is the case with Phillipines and other countries...If there is no problem with their English and cost ..The IT majors have no reason to not to go to them. Thus reducing India's growth in IT.......

The IT majors are even targeting European countries like Hungary and Ukraine as they are MULTI-LINGUAL and as they have to establish themselves in Europe.
So................Its Heating Up ova here.............................................

WHAT I MUST PRESUME AND WORK AT :

The trend followed by most Indian Engineers is that they get into much "BALANCED MARKET"
Lemme explain this to you...........
The way i differentiate BALANCED and UNBALANCED market is as follows.....

Persons in UNBALANCED markets are those who are well prepared with cutting-edge technologies and new programming languages. Assume ".NET" is an emerging technology at present. If u r a programmer who is well versed with .NET now, You can demand more salary from the Industry. This is meant by UNBALANCED market and you can excel with in this until it becomes a BALANCED market.
What i mean here is ......Sticking with the previous assumption of .NET, As the days pass by we get lot of programmers attracted to .NET and as they get hold of the handbooks of .NET...They too get more proficiency with .NET and give a tough competition. Thus reducing the cost of the .NET programmer until the market becomes a BALANCED one.

Most importantly we must know that when a company recruits us, give training and offer 3 lacs/annum or anything........"IT IS SIMPLY THE INVESTMENT THEY MAKE ON US."
Just take this in a business point of view...U get to invest on something to get profit. The same is the case with the IT companies. They risk their money, resources and time on us to get their profit. So they expect only "value for money" from us.
On the other hand, From the employee point of view ....remember that "WE INVEST OUR TIME AND KNOWLEDGE" on them. Its only whether we get the apt income or incentive for the effort we had put.

There are some points to be remembered here......

* Update with cutting-edge technologies....Make urself valid all the time.

* My job is a Business that expects profit on both sides.

* The most important thing than all above is the commitment we put on our work.

These r the things that came to my mind and thought of sharing this ..........And i hope i don overdo this presumption thing......

Can u say any difference between him and me?????.

The situation here now is that i dont see any difference b/w them when it comes to getting Passport. There will be no passport issued to Bin Laden in India rite???? So is the case with me now....

U wil see how fcked up im to compare myself with Laden.

Visit no.1 :

It was 1st week of January 2007, when i applied for my passport. Myself , my mom applied for it @ the same time and my dad applied for renewing his passport. I was doin my Engineering 3rd year in Chennai and my permanent address was in Trichy. So i must give my temporary address in my passport. And i gave it. After all the police enquiry and everything, i thought everything was going well. But i was not.....Grrrrr...

It took a long time for my passport to be dispatched from the passport office (ie) I got the status chked in the website that my passport has been dispatched to ma temporary address. But it din reach my address.........Instead it was returned to the passport office for invalid Address......

U wont believe the address They had printed........ "The address was half Chennai and half Trichy"

Visit no.2 :

I din understand wat was happening. And then a notice came to me asking for the explanation about the address. Then i went again to the passport office with an appointment to explain them.

I expalined about the mishap they hav made in my address and made sure that i hav given the correct address in my application form. That officer assured me delivery of my passport
in 5 days.

I then got my passport in 5 days @ the correct address. I was more fcked up to see that the "MORON" address they sent me b4 was not corrected inside my passport but only in the envelope they had sent me.

Visit no.3 :

I had my college, campus interviews and exams after these and so i left this matter and thought of doin it after i complete my exams. Then @ the end of 2007 after my 7th sem was over i went to the passport office for correction and again i explained them about their mistake and i had nothing to do with this address. It took a whole day for this and atlast i changed my temporary address.

U think...Its all over?????.....

No its not........It was April 2008 and my temporary address had to be changed to my permanent address as i had completed my degree and was not living in Chennai @ my temporary address anymore........This time i was adament to apply for "Change of Address" in TATKAL coz... i know they wil get me fcked up..........So i did it.....

Visit no.4 :

I went there a week back and applied for my change of address in TATKAL and spent a whole day with dat. The officers concerned with this were son nice to me asked me the whole drama. I explained them everything and everything was goin fine. I was told that passport will arrive within 5 days.

But it arrived in 2 days...I was surprised.... and was very happy....Checked my address and everythin.....All were correct....

Then got frustrated again to see that....Emmigration Clearence was not given. This was not the case with my old passport coz the address was my only problem and the emmigration clearence was fine...........

So its time for VISIT no. 5 and it on WEDNESDAY, 25th june......Donno wat wil happen that time.

It has been 1 1/2 years of quest for passport.........and
Wish me best of LUCK..... :(

***** Update*******
Got it at last :P
The college was over at this period of time. Only our convocation was left. I was disappointed with myself coz i cud'nt organise a mega-tour successfully. The tours we had planned earlier like GOA and even a 2-day off @ an ECR resort was fucked up by some guys. No college life is complete without a BIG TOUR......rite????

We were sitting asusually in bessy beach and suddenly praveen , out of desperation put up the idea of goin for a tour before the convocation. Myself and Arun earlier had funny talks about going to Darjeeling or Shimla and we did even conclude that this will also get fucked up. And the talks were gettin intensified day by day....

To be honest , I must confess here that @ first I was not at all confident about this tour. I needed some support for sure to carry this out so i dragged Karthi.G into all this and I will tell u...Its not easy to make him worK. Suddenly i got some ENTHU and jus b4 i was heading to my home on March 25th, 2008, myself,Praveen and Karthi went to the Sun tourism office @ Greams road and asked for Darjeeling package. That guy advised us to go for Agra-Shimla-Manali-Delhi. And we were convinced with the package and the amount. Then i left for ma home....Now comes the hard part , Getting all d guys together. I still remember all the conference calls we were into to confirm the persons who r all comin to the tour.

I still have a copy of the probables i had typed in ma mobyl even now.....They were Myself,Karthi,Arun,Kosu,Praveen,Balaji,Arun Mech, Girish,Kishore,Joe,Sumba, Muthu,Murali, Antony,Pradeep,Monesh,Deepak, Manmadhan, Brendon, Koushik and Arvind.
(16 from CSE-A and 5 from MEch.). We somehow called these guys up and convinced them for the dates we had planned and was waiting for their positive reply.

But the guys who cud come were only 11 atlast (8 from CSE and 3 from MECH).
I was really MADDD @ Girish, Muthu, Manmadhan, Pradeep and Kosu for not comin to the tour. I dint express this to them but i think this is the time to tel what i felt that time. Not only because they fcked up at the last minute but also becoz the tour wud hav been much better with them. I swear that they wud regret for not being a part of the tour..(AM I MEAN ENOUGH??????Grrr.)

@ last the dates were confirmed (6th April to 15th April). It was a 10-day tour and we somehow got the tickets confirmed @ the last minute. Wil catch u guys with the awesome experiences we had in the tour........

Its been a long time since i blogged. It was mainly because i was lazy and was engaged in thinking wen to start writing blog again ;)

Lemme start it again by givin my CAMPUS INTERVIEW EXPERIENCES...May be it wil help u guYS as well!!!!!!!!

First of all..It will be about my Preparations..........

It was one hell of a preparation for the campus interviews ..As we were very much desperate to get into any one of the top 3 comin to our college...(ie) CTS, WIPRO and HCL. CTS was scheduled to come on June 19th 2007 which happens to be my Birth day. I was pretty sure that LADY LUCK will shine on me also since it was my b'day. But no speaking of luck until u study hard for the aptitude.
5 of us (kosu,me,karthi, kishore and riyaz ) joined hands to prepare for the aptitude and Interview. We gathered in Kottivakkam to prepare for it @ the 1st week of may. No one thought that it was too early to prepare coz. we were in lot of pressure from our parents and surroundings...Each and evry1 of us.

So enough of all the build-up. We started it atlast. Kishore got us a 4gb data dvd for the preparation of apps and interview. The size of it scares u rite???? Even we were scared. So we dint even touch it. We really started studying from RS AGARWAL's APTITUDE which is considered by me as the bible for INDIAN CAMPUS APTITUDES. We did not study much at the early days but it was satisfactionary. Later on we did it with increasing rate. [ I still remember myself and kishore studyin "How to attend Interviews" from that 4gb DVD. That was the only thing we studied from that.]
We studied more than what we studid for 3 years in college.

Now Lets get into ACTION....FIRST IT WAS CTS on June 19th, 2007.

It was my birthday this day. And i was pretty sure about that LADY LUCK i was talking about earlier. The aptitude test took place that day. And i did it well. While announcing the Aptitude results , I got lil bit tensed as i was the last one to be announced from my class.
Next day was the interview. It was the first time ever im attending an interview of any kind. So i was very tensed. Having prepared well for all the technical stuffs i was pretty surprised that it was all HR . No technical question was asked. The interviewer was an old man. I answered him pretty well and i was sure that i would go the distance. The results were to be announced the next day. But really i was not that much tensed that day coz i thought i wud get selected for sure.
But the LADY LUCK showed her FOOT to me. We went to the EVENING SHOW "SIVAJI " to forget the failure. THAT WAS COOL!!!!!!!!!! SHRIYA SARAN WAS MY ONLY CONSOLATION...hehe

Besides all these i was able to point out some mistakes i did over there which might spoiled my chances.

NOTE :

* Never ever tell or speak about anything which you do not know in detail. Draw a boundary and keep the speech simple and effective. Never get into his hands and don provoke him to cross question you.
* Most of all Prepare as hard as you can for the Aptitude tests.
* GO through the sample questions and the pattern given in the web.Do not deviate from that. * Prepare for the companies one by one.
* Keep urself as cool as possible. Don let urself down with one failure and think that there is always chances coming next.

Second one was...... WIPRO on JUNE 23rd, 2007.

We were a lil bit down before goin for WIPRO as our first company got busted. But not that much coz we thought that someone was waiting for us. We stuck to the same pattern for studying aptitude and we cleared it with ease.
Wipro normally has a technical and a HR interview unlike CTS. So it was new to us. I was pretty confident with the technical round. And when my time came asusual i was little bit nervous.
The interviewer asked me questions from C,C++,Data structures,Java, UML, and some HTML as my mini project was about SPAM FILTERING.
I answered all of them and finally after 45 mins of interview the interviewer asked me some questions in MicroProcessor which were not answerable by me. I told him that "I am not well versed with it as far as now and i will study it as soon as possible ".
He then told me that "Your basics are very good ...But better luck next time"

I just left the hall with a lil smile at him.

NOTE :
There were much i learnt from this experience too..

* If u r from CS , Go through all the basics of ur subjects.
* Never hesitate or skip ur core subjects.
* Always answer the interviewer with a lil smile ....Dont overdo it.

Our next stop will be HCL, 29th June, 2007

Havin got my Experiences on my HR and TEchnical round from the previous 2 failures. I prepared only for my HR for HCL (REMEMBER MYSELF AND RAGHUL DOIN THAT) . It had a specific paper for CS students and it was the 1st time HCL made the appi online. It was quite tough but cleared it.

Next stop was HR. Thebround lasted just 10 mins. I was asked simple questions like family, objective, why HCL, adaptability...etc..etc. I answered them well and like before was satisfied with me. We went again to SIVAJI movie as the results were to be announced the nxt day only.
The results were announced the nxt day and i was pretty happy with myself.

NOTE :

* Never hesitate to ask anything.( like water....etc)
* Be bold while ur answering him.
* Collect latest news about the company ur gonna try.

ATlast , LADY LUCK showed her LOVE.. ;)

Hope This helps nyone who reads this.!!!!!!

If you’re like me, you’re not impressed enough by Vista to make the switch just yet. Unfortunately, my old Averatec notebook crapped out on me a few weeks ago and I was in need of a replacement. The best value out there that met my requirements was Dell’s new Inspiron 1420, which replaces their E1405 14.1″ model. Unlike the E1405, the 1420 is only available with Vista. After receiving my machine yesterday I set about wiping it clean and starting fresh with a copy of XP.

What You’ll Need

Before we begin, there are a few things we’ll need.

Download and install nLite 1.4 beta.

Download the Intel AHCI drivers for slipstreaming.

A blank CD-R/RW to burn your ISO.

A USB thumbdrive, CD-R/RW, or other storage medium to get our network drivers installed.

Patience.

My Dell’s Specs

Here are the specs on my machine so you can compare them to yours. If you’re running Intel integrated video (the X3100 I believe) or Intel wireless you can easily find drivers on their site.

Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB cache)

160GB 7200RPM HDD

2GB PC2-5300 DDR2

8400M GS 128MB

1440×900 display

Bluetooth

Integrated webcam

Dell 1390 B/G wireless

Installing XP

I inserted my XP disc, selected the optical drive as my first boot device in the BIOS, and was on my way. After XP ran through its usual setup procedures I was greeted by my first obstacle. XP could not find my hard drive. I had heard of this problem arising before. The culprit is the BIOS setting for AHCI or SATA functionality for the hard drive. ACHI is a bit of Intel technology which enables SATAII features like Native Command Queuing. While that’s all well and good, XP by itself, even with SP2, is too old to recognize what’s going on here. To fix this, we have two options:

The first and easier option is to simply set the hard drive to SATA mode in the BIOS.

The second option, which I prefer, is to slipstream Intel’s latest AHCI drivers into the XP disc. I have not tried both so I’m not sure if enabling AHCI has any performance advantages, but humor me here.

In case you missed it above, to begin will need a program called nLite, which performs the actual slipstream process for us.
Not only can nLite slipstream drivers, but it can also add service packs, hotfixes, and create unattended installs. For more on those features you can check out their manual pages and other guides around the web.

Extract all the contents of your XP disc into a folder on your hard disk. The folder name is not important.

Open nLite. The welcome screen will ask you to locate the folder on your hard drive where you dumped XP. Select it, and click next.

On the next screen we will decide which options we would like to perform to customize our install. For our purposes we will only select Integrate Drivers and Create a Bootable ISO.

On the next screen we will choose which drivers to integrate. If you haven’t already, Download this package and extract it. Now click Insert, browse to folder, and open the INF file. About a dozen options will appear. Select them all and click continue.

From the Create a Bootable ISO screen you have a few options. You may burn the image directly, create an image and then burn, or simply create the image for later. You can also change the volume name, disc label, etc. None of these options are consequential to this guide so you can choose whichever is best for you. Personally, however, I find creating the image and then burning to be more stable.

Now if we boot from our newly created XP disc, viola! XP sees our drive. Follow the setup process as normal. If you’ve never installed XP before there are a wealth of guides on the internet.

Driver Installation

In about 20 minutes we are greeted with our familiar XP desktop. Have your USB thumbdrive ready or some other means of transferring files ready.
Chipset
Always a good idea to install these first. You can download them here.
You may notice you have no network connectivity whatsoever. This is the next problem we should remedy.
Broadcom Integrated NIC
The driver provided by Dell’s website works just fine. You can grab it here.
Dell 1390 Wireless B/G
This is slightly more tricky. When I downloaded Dell’s driver package it simply would not detect my wireless card. To solve this, I first extracted the driver package to my hard drive by running it. Make sure you extract to an easy to find location, such as your Desktop. After this, setup runs automatically. Cancel it.
Next, browse to the Device Manager by right clicking My Computer, clicking the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Scroll down to Unknown Devices, right click Network Controller and click Update Driver.
From here, tell Windows not to search Windows Update for your driver. In the next screen, check install from a list or specific location and click next. Select Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install, next, and finally Have Disk. Browse to the folder where you extracted the driver package. Inside you will find a folder called DRIVERS. You’ll be presented with two .INF files. Select (file name goes here) and open it. Hooray! We now have working wireless.
NVIDIA 8400M GS
NVIDIA constantly releases driver updates for its products. Unfortunately, it leaves mobile graphics support to the individual vendor. Thankfully there is the wonderful website called LaptopVideo2Go to help ease our pain. Browse to the drivers section and download version 162.18 along with the modified INF file. The version is not terribly important, but since I’ve had success with this set with my desktop’s 8800GTX I’ve chosen it for this article.
Once your download has finished, run it to extract the files. Browse to the directory where you’ve extracted and replace the nv4_disp.inf file with your modified version. Run setup.exe and everything should install as normal. After this it would be a good idea to reboot.
The Easy Stuff
These drivers should be as easy as a download and install.
Wrapping Up

That’s it! This concludes my guide to XP on the Insprion 1420. Please leave your comments and additional tips. It is probably possible to slipstream many of these drivers into your XP disc as well, so I may explore those options in a future guide.

Bad block or faulty sector is the name given to a damaged area on a hard disk. It is a physical problem, i. e., the hard disk's magnetic media is defective. When we run a disk utility such as Scandisk and Norton Disk Doctor, such faulty sectors are marked with a "B".

What really happens, however, is that current physical formatting programs do not actually physically format the disk. If this should be feasible, the hard disk would be damaged, since hard disk tracks have a signal called ""servo"" that operates as a guide for the hard disk head. If we really formatted a hard disk at low level, these servos would be erased and the hard disk head would be unable to move any longer.

Low level formatting programs are utilities for detecting bad sectors and wiping the disk (for security reasons, for instance, after concluding a confidential project), not carrying out – despite their name – low level formatting.

These programs have an interesting function, which consists of updating the disk's bad sector map. When you use this option, the program scans the disk, seeking defective sectors and updating the disk's map.

When you run a high level formatting (through the Format command), this command skips the sectors contained in this bad sector table. Accordingly, there will not be any sector marked B ("Bad Block") in the FAT, although the defective sectors remain on the disk.

Defective sectors are not removed, but merely noted in this table of bad sectors, resulting in the system ignoring them (in other words, the sectors are hidden).

If new bad sectors keep occurring after running this procedure, you should get rid of the disk, as its magnetic surface is deteriorating, for some reason.
Billions of scraps later, we've learned that scraps are a huge hit, and have added ways to make them even more fun by enabling you to add videos, photos and HTML.

We've been wondering (and perhaps you have too): Which orkut users are scrappiest? In our recent sample, members from the island nation of Grenada had the highest scrap counts at an average of 1877 scraps. Of the biggest orkut nations, Pakistanis came in first, followed by Americans, Indians, and Brazilians. (All of these statistics are based on current scraps that have not been deleted by the recipients.)

Women receive just under half (48%) of all scraps. Women from the Cayman Islands receive the most, followed by those from the British Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, San Marino, and the Northern Mariana Islands. (What is it about those islanders?) Albanian women had the fewest scraps (81) -- still a pretty substantial number when you think about it.

On the male side, islanders still rule: men from Grenada averaged a whopping 2569 scraps each. Here's the full chart:

Country (gender)

Scraps received

Scraps received (women)

Scraps received (men)

Grenada

1877

557

2569

Cayman Islands

861

1093

715

Pakistan

758

717

779

United States

423

249

578

India

345

443

301

Brazil

267

272

263

Who's sending these scraps? The scrappiest users hail from Pakistan, followed immediately by Madagascar and the Central African Republic. Among women, the most scraps come from Jamaica, then Madagascar, followed by the nation of St. Pierre and Miquelon. Among men, Pakistanis sent the most, then Qatar.

And what are people saying in scraps? Some messages occurred again and again. Out of a sample of 1,000,000 short scraps, the following were among the most common:

scrap

# of occurrences

hi

1131

oi [hi]

689

ok

298

parabens [congratulations]

273

.

187

hello

184

=]

146

vlw [thx]

135

^^

133

blz [ok]

132

=)

124

:)

117

[:p]

115

=D

115

Not only was the word "hi" common, it also appeared frequently followed by extra "i"s. The company's major product was a parallel flow based programming system called Orchestrate. The product enabled users to assemble a program using predefined components (called operators) connected by virtual datasets in a manner similar to Unix pipelines.

Torrent was acquired by Ascential Software in late 2001 for about $46 million; Orchestrate became a key part of Ascential's DataStage data integration system. When Ascential was subsequently acquired by IBM in mid-2005, DataStage became part of IBM's Information Server product.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10201623333204598744noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3076880243818190391.post-60836032092701202802007-12-06T18:26:00.000+05:302014-03-12T14:08:09.080+05:30Myself and my frnds frm Traffic police>>>>It had been a very unlucky last 2 months for me....
